A standard text message contains up to 160 characters. Anything longer than that counts as multiple messages. The device determines if the message shows as concatenated or as broken messages.
If your message has 161 characters then the first message will be 153 characters long, and so on. This process is to help thread the messages together. If you add Unicode including special symbols, languages, and emojis, the character count drops to 67 characters for the first and so on.
